In a corporate communications blog, you might expect posts on how to sell more widgets, attract investors, get analysts to write research coverage, get your CEO interviewed on CNBC, etc., but we'll look at some more universal themes too--music, kids, parenting, space...

Sept. 26, 2009: Get Ready to be Blown Away by Take 6
Last night my family had the incredible good fortune to see the six-man a cappella group ‘Take 6’ at the King Center, University of Colorado – Denver. ‘Take 6’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen. The sheer vocal purity, powerful six-part harmonies, individual and collective stage presence and the massive energy of good will generated during each song by these six guys is literally stunning. They take the art of singing and infuse it with a level of quality that you will probably never see anywhere else. After a ‘Take 6’ performance you may be tempted to go home and burn all your Rolling Stones CDs. I once heard Alice Cooper on his radio show explaining that he couldn’t sing but he could “sell a song.” To see the antithesis of that philosophy, go see ‘Take 6’ – if you don't mind having your jaw hang open for a couple of hours. The YouTube video of 'Take 6' below gives a little taste:
Oct. 1, 2009: Mining the Middle School Mind
If anyone else has kids in middle school (grades 6,7,8) you know what it feels like. Sometime after their 11th birthday, just when you you figured out parenting, the rug gets yanked out...things are suddenly very different with your kid. Haven't you heard yourself say to your 12- ,13- or 14-year-old, "Hey, what were you thinking??$$##!! You act like your brain is missing!" Well it turns out there is scientific proof that is true. "We know now that between the ages of 12 and 15, the brain destroys more than 20 percent of all previously built connections. The brain is, essentially, pruning itself (Strauch, 2003)."
This information (quoted above) comes just in time to offer us parents some much needed help in a great article called "Mining the Middle School Mind." It's a very clear, well-written 2-page article by David Vawter of Winthrop University. The article appeared in the National Association of Elementary School Principals' publication "Middle Matters," March 2009 issue (thank you to David Vawter and the NAESP, who graciously permitted me to link to the article). Enjoy the read; it explains a lot! Click Here to Read: Mining the Middle School Mind - by David Vawter.
Oct. 27, 2009: John Resnick's Interview with Walter Anderson
John Resnick has a radio program called "Legends of Success" on which he does a wonderful job of bringing out the wisdom, intelligence, candor and humanity of successful people who have made it to the top of their professions -- people like Jack Welsh, Walter Cronkite, Steve Forbes and Walter Anderson. This week's interview with Walter Anderson, CEO and Publisher of Parade Magazine, was particularly good in that Anderson candidly explains how he overcame a horrendous childhood relationship and used his experience to create a reaction that propelled his success. Visit John's Web site to request a copy of the transcript and listen to past interviews.
